Night Vision and Night Vision Goggle Training System |
It is well known that mishap rates increase during night operations. Loss of many visual cues, greater difficulty in target acquisition and tracking, and the effects of ground lights are among the many hazards that Aircrew face when they fly at night. Use of Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) can greatly increase the aviator's ability to see in low light conditions. However, NVGs neither provide perfect vision, nor are they used at all times during flight. Further, their use brings a number of new concerns to night operations. Specialized training in both unaided night vision and the use of NVGs is required to reduce hazards and increase efficiency in night operations
ETC NVTS / NVGTS combines two systems for training students for safe, effective night operations: the NVTS (Night Vision Training System) and the NVGTS (Night Vision Goggle Training System). The NVTS is used to teach students how to optimize their ability to see at night with unaided eyes. The NVGTS is used to teach students how to use their NVGs properly and strategies for maximizing effectiveness and safety when flying while using night vision goggles.
The two systems are provided together. The Night Vision Training System has a broad application and can benefit aircrew of rotary and fixed-wing aircrew as well as ground and naval personnel. The Night Vision Goggle Training System is used for training personnel who will also be equipped with Night Vision Goggles. Since night flying can involve both unaided and aided night vision operations, both types of training are necessary to optimize personnel effectiveness and reduce mishaps at night.
